How to set a new root password on Debian 8 and Debian 9 OS when it is known Print

You need to create a remote connection to a virtual server using the SSH network protocol. The easiest way to do this is through the free PuTTY client program (for Windows) or the built-in SSH client for Mac OS.

There are many convenient server clients for mobile device users.

Changing root password using PuTTY

Launch the client. In the window that opens (the “Host Name” column), enter the IP address or domain name of the server and click “Connect”.
Enter your username (root) and existing password. Don't forget to press Enter after entering each value. For security reasons, characters you enter are not displayed on the screen.
Enter the passwd command, then type the new password twice (after each Enter).
The root password has been changed.
